The number of people with diabetes or who are at risk for diabetes is eye-opening. More than 10% of the U.S. population, or 34.2 million people, have diabetes. Another 7.3 million people have diabetes that is undiagnosed, and another 88 million adults are at increased risk for developing diabetes – a condition known as prediabetes.


In Wisconsin, prediabetes is even more startling, as 34% of adults have prediabetes, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services in 2018.

Diabetes can cause serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, vision loss, and foot problems. Risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes include being over age 45, obesity, certain ethnicity, family history of diabetes and an inactive lifestyle.

encourage members to take a health assessment annually to learn about their risk and to work with a health coach on lifestyle modification,” said Tracy LaPointe, Health Services clinical manager at Security Health Plan. “These are lifestyle changes that benefit long-term health.”

Health assessments and coaching

Security Health Plan also emphasizes preventive approaches to health care by encouraging routine physical examinations and recommended immunizations, and by promoting a proactive approach to health and lifestyle changes.

The online health assessment on the Security Health Plan website takes about 10 minutes to complete and asks a variety of questions about diet, exercise, sleep, medical history and lifestyle to give participants a complete view of their health.

“Security Health Plan offers assistance to our members across the health continuum,” LaPointe said. “We explain the importance of yearly preventive exams with a primary care provider and encourage and help members schedule them. We collaborate with the provider to implement a treatment plan aimed at reducing health risks. Helping members learn to self-manage a variety of potential health concerns, including warning signs and risks, is foundational to creating a healthy workforce.”

Diabetes prevention program available

Marshfield Clinic Health System also offers a diabetes prevention program, heart failure improvement clinic and nicotine prevention workshops to meet your employees' health needs.

The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is a lifestyle change program that uses a CDC-designed curriculum entitled "PreventT2." DPP is designed for people with a high risk for type 2 diabetes who want to lower their risk. 

Initially, participants meet as a group to establish personal goals with the certified lifestyle coach. In this interactive and supportive group setting, they are empowered to work towards their individual goals.

As they progress, participants begin to take ownership of this motivation, becoming their own best health advocates.

A health professional completes comprehensive screenings, including biometric measurements and labs, at a Health System location or your worksite*. When combined with our online health assessment, these results provide participants with a clear picture of their health.
